چکیده

Florida’s commercial and recreational shark landings represent a significant portion of the total U.S. Atlantic shark landings (NMFS, 1993). Shark landings have increased significantly during the past decade because human consumption of shark meat has become increasingly acceptable and because, in Asian markets, the demand for shark fins is very high— as are the prices paid for them (NMFS, 1993; Brown, in press). The east-central coast of Florida is an important area for commercial and recreational shark fishing, and a wide array of shark species, including those examined in this study, are landed in this region (Trent et al., 1997; FDEP1). Mercury, a toxic metallic element, has been shown to bioaccumulate in fish tissue, and therefore, fish can represent a major dietary source of mercury to humans (Phillips and Buhler, 1978; Turner et al., 1980; Lyle, 1986). Methylmercury is the most toxic form of mercury for humans to consume (Meaburn, 1978; NMFS, 1993) and essentially all mercury found in fish muscle tissue (>95%) is in the monomethyl form (CH3Hg)(Grieb et al., 1990; Bloom, 1992). Therefore, the measurement of total mercury provides an approximation of Mercury levels in four species of sharks from the Atlantic coast of Florida

Mitochondrial DNA diversity and divergence among sharpnose sharks , Rhizoprionodon terraenovae , from the Gulf of Mexico and Mid - Atlantic Bight

-The Atlantic sharpnose shark, Rhizoprionodon terraenovae, is a small coastal shark that is harvested in both directed and nondirected fisheries throughout its range. Because pups of this species are found both along the southeastern U.S. Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Mexico, it is possible that multiple isolated breeding stocks exist. Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis ofmitoch...

Bioaccumulation and biomagnification of mercury and methylmercury in four sympatric coastal sharks in a protected subtropical lagoon.

Mercury bioaccumulation is frequently observed in marine ecosystems, often with stronger effects at higher trophic levels. We compared total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) from muscle with length, comparative isotopic niche, and diet (via δ13C and δ15N) among four sympatric coastal sharks in Florida Bay (USA): blacknose, blacktip, bull, and lemon. Mercury in blacknose and blacktip shark...

Five decades of decline in sharks of Iran

Shark stocks in Iranian water of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman are declining sharply. Although fishing and heavy fines have been banned by the organizations in charge of fishing for these fish, bycatch in some fishing methods, including Neritic and oceanic Gillnet, trawl fish and shrimp, long loine and trolling, still catch sharks. Slowly In this study, during a period of 10 years from 2010...

Regional-Scale Migrations and Habitat Use of Juvenile Lemon Sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) in the US South Atlantic

Resolving the geographic extent and timing of coastal shark migrations, as well as their environmental cues, is essential for refining shark management strategies in anticipation of increasing anthropogenic stressors to coastal ecosystems. We employed a regional-scale passive acoustic telemetry array encompassing 300 km of the east Florida coast to assess what factors influence site fidelity of...

Global versus local causes and health implications of high mercury concentrations in sharks from the east coast of South Africa.

Conservation concern regarding the overharvest of global shark populations for meat and fin consumption largely surrounds documented deleterious ecosystem effects, but may be further supported by improved knowledge of possibly high levels in their edible tissues (particularly meat) of the neurotoxin, methylmercury (CH3Hg). For many regions, however, little data exist on shark tissue Hg concentr...
